As I am writing today’s blog post, all I can think of is faces.

How many faces have I seen all through my existence? I obviously can’t tell but if I were to put a figure to it, I’d maybe say a million?

I checked google out of curiosity but the stats I saw weren’t very impressive.

How could google say a person only sees between 1,000 and 10,000 faces during their lifetime? I think those figures are inaccurate. But then, it depends on many factors like a person’s location and how sociable and outgoing they are.

Tonight though, I am more interested in the quality and not quantity of faces especially those that show our reflections.

We see thousands of faces.

Some clearly while others blur into the background. But in rare situations, we meet those that stick around, stop us and become mirrors.

I personally met two of those.

Meeting my first mirror was by sheer coincidence. She happened to be a service person at a store I had gone to for a service. We started talking and realized that the same events happened in our lives at the same time. It was so crazy to the point that they all happened on the same day!

“Who are you?” I remember asking.

She was just as stunned as I was and that realization was what made us connect with each other in a way that I don’t think anyone who didn’t go through the experiences we did would understand.

The second person is someone who is a colleague and a friend. This person is someone I’ve come to respect deeply. We met in a regular manner, but it didn’t take me long to realize that I was talking to someone who, if not for our different cultures, would have been my twin.

We have similar upbringing, values, interests and outlook on life that makes me wonder how it is humanly possible for such to exist. We also have experienced similar things at similar periods in our lives which makes me wonder:

Does life hold a mirror up so we can see our reflections as people?

These encounters don’t feel like a coincidence but a reminder that I am not alone in my journey.

I know this because my life journey led me to those two people who, like me, have similar backgrounds and experiences. It’s fascinating because I get to experience my experiences through someone else’s eyes while knowing I also have the gift to do the same for them.

My path led me to these two people and so if you ever met your reflection, take a moment to pause. Be thankful and glad that you’re finally able to see yourself in another person.
